The Warrior
An Astrological Essay
Before we learn language, we learn how to move. Something inside of us reaches, pushes, pulls, resists, and asserts. This ancient impulse is the realm of Mars. It is raw and wordless, an instinct older than the roles we grow into. Mars is the animating force, the one that drives us toward action long before we give words to our desires.
Mars is the fire that lives beneath our hesitation. It is the heat that floods the body in moments of truth, the pulse that quickens when we decide that we can no longer stay silent or still. While other planets teach us how to refine, reflect, build, or connect, Mars teaches us something simpler and more primal. It asks us, what are we willing to do in order to live in alignment with ourselves? Not what we want in theory, but what we are willing to fight for in practice.
Traditionally called the lesser malefic, Mars has long been associated with conflict, struggle, and the sharp edges of life. But the ancients never mistook its harshness for meaninglessness. The heat of Mars is the heat of survival, the force that keeps a flame alive in the dark. Without Mars, we would drift through our lives without momentum, unable to assert a boundary, claim a path, or initiate the changes that shape who we will become. Mars is the part of the psyche that knows how to engage in battle when we are threatened, defeated, dismissed, or underestimated. It is our refusal to collapse.
In its most dignified form, Mars does not seek destruction; it seeks authenticity. It burns away pretense, revealing what we truly want and what we can no longer endure. When we move with Mars, we move with a kind of honesty that is felt rather than spoken. It is the honesty of instinct and embodiment. There is nothing abstract about this planet. It belongs to the body, to the blood, and to the moments we choose ourselves above all else.
Where Mars sits in any birth chart, is the territory of life that activates our courage. Some of us defend our inner world fiercely fighting battles no one else can see. Others will fight externally for connection, purpose, belonging, independence, or truth. Some will fight quietly with persistence and discipline while others will fight loudly with heat and conviction. The expression of Mars differs but the lesson remains the same. How do we confront what stands between us, and the direction we want to go next?
For those born with Aries or Scorpio rising, Mars rules our entire birth chart. This gives Mars an amplified role. It becomes the primary engine behind the direction in our life. With Mars at the helm of our birth chart movement is never optional, it becomes the way life itself is revealed. A Mars ruled birth chart carries an undercurrent of intensity, purpose, and decisive energy. Challenges are not merely obstacles; they are initiations. Life asks for participation, not observation. To have Mars as the chart ruler is to move through the world with an instinctive drive toward self-determination. Even when we feel afraid, depleted, or unsure, Mars stirs our will to keep going.
With Mars as the ruler of our birth chart, this lesson becomes the central thread of our life story. Our birth chart’s direction is steered by instinct, intensity, and a refusal to settle for anything that feels inauthentic. Mars as a chart ruler requires active participation in one’s life, not passive observation. It pulls us toward experiences that demand our attention, that sharpen our discernment, that challenge us to know the difference between reaction and response. It tests our stamina. It shows us our thresholds. It asks us to trust the deeper intelligence of the body when the mind is uncertain.
Where Saturn, the greater malefic, teaches responsibility, Mars teaches initiation. Saturn asks for endurance; Mars demands action. Together they form the backbone of our growth and evolution. The structure that holds us, and the fire that propels us. Mars is the warrior not because it delights in battle but because it represents the part of us that refuses to disappear. In every birth chart, Mars marks the place where we stop abandoning ourselves. It shows us where we must step forward, even when stepping forward feels impossible.
To work with Mars is to understand that courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to act despite it. Anger becomes information. Desire becomes direction. Action becomes integrity. Mars is the flame that does not wait for permission. It is the force that seizes the moment when something in us whispers, act now, this is yours to do.
When we follow that voice, uncertain yet alive, we discover that the warrior was never something outside of us. It is the part within us that always knows how to protect and fight for ourselves. It is the compass that points us toward the most courageous version of who we are meant to be.
What you’ve read here is an excerpt from my memoir, Rising Through the Clouds. Like all works in progress, its language and shape may evolve as the book moves toward publication. Thank you for being here and being part of the journey.

So beautiful and poetic! I'm so looking forward to reading your book. :) As an Aries rising with Mars in 12th house Pisces, this line was so powerful to me. "Mars is the warrior not because it delights in battle but because it represents the part of us that refuses to disappear."
